How to prevent frozen pipes

There are several actions homeowners can take to prevent frozen pipes. These include:

  1. Insulate all pipes in unheated areas (basements, crawl spaces, etc.)
  2. Install heat tape on pipes in exposed areas
  3. If you leave home for a long period of time €“ shut off the main water valve. Don’t set furnace below 55 degrees Fahrenheit
  4. On cold and windy nights €“ let water drip in cold rooms & other areas
  5. Open cabinet doors for plumbing under sinks
  6. Seal cracks and holes on outside walls and foundations near water pipes

Keep in mind, a small crack in a water line can unleash 250 gallons of water in a single day.
