Go Green to Save Green!

We are always on the hunt for finding the best prices through bargaining, cashing in coupons, or tenting out in front of a store for the €œdeal of a lifetime€! Though some would argue they thrive off of the thrill of the hunt, wouldn’t it be great to just control the savings ourselves?

By tweaking the way you look at your lifestyle and appliances, you can significantly lower your gas and electric bills by sticking with these helpful tips!

  • Flick the Switch - Keeping in mind that electricity costs $0.10 per kilowatt hour, turn off the lights each time you leave a room.
  • Unplug - Even when your electronics are turned off, they are still leaking energy. Plug in all of your appliances to a power switch and turn everything off at once to ensure no energy is wasted. (up to 20 percent)
  • Watch that Temp – In the winter, turning your thermostat DOWN from 72 degrees to 68 degrees can decrease your heating costs by up to 15 percent. During the summer, raising your thermostat UP from 72 degrees to 78 degrees can decrease cooling costs by almost 20 percent.  (Your body will barely be able to tell the difference, but your wallet will!)
  • Screw in Savings – Use energy-efficient bulbs known as Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL)
  • Fill Up - When using the dryer or dishwasher, be sure to have a full load as they use the same amount of energy as a small.

It is also a great idea to invest in a programmable thermostat to either turn down or shut off the energy use at night or when no one is home. This is a great way to €œfix it and forget it€ while easily saving up to 20 percent a year on your heating bills!

Buckle up on our responsibilities to avoid having to bundle up in your own home this winter!
